NETHERLANDS ANTILLES - SINT EUSTATIUS
'STATIA', A PARADISE FOR NATURE LOVERS

Saba, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten is part of the "Windward Islands" (Bovenwindse Eilanden, east of Puerto Rico). These islands are subject to hurricanes in the summer months. The island was seen by Christopher Columbus in 1493. In 1636 it was colonized by the Dutch West India Company. The first colonists came from the province of Zealand. In the 18th century the island became known as the Golden Rock. The island's economy flourished by ignoring the trade embargoes between the great powers. Arms and ammunition were sold to everyone who wanted to pay for it. After the 4th Anglo- Dutch War Sint Eustatius was taken by the British on in 1781 and reconquered by the Dutch (and their French allies) in 1784.
