Moldova's territory was inhabited in ancient times by the Dacians. The principality became tributary to the Ottoman Empire during 16th century. Moldova was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1812 and reunited with other Romanian lands in Romania in 1918. The country was incorporated into the Soviet Union at the close of World War II
